FAQ

How much rugby experience do I need to participate?

None!  While we would love to have experienced players join us, many players on the club did not have any rugby experience before showing up to their first practice. We also accept social club members and supporters.

When/where do you practice and play?

The club participates in a fall and spring season, and based on our performance in the spring season, we may be eligible to play in the national playoffs.

The Fall season begins in August and lasts into December, and the Spring season generally begins in February and lasts through May depending on whether the club is playoff eligible.  During the season practices are held every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 6:00p-8:00p. All practices are held at Annunciation Square Park, 800 Race Street New Orleans, LA.

I'm interested and want to come out for a practice.  What do I need to bring?

All you need to bring/wear is a pair of cleats, workout clothes (soccer shorts are preferable), mouth guard (optional), a bottle of water, and a good attitude. If given enough notice most times we can source cleats and rugby shorts from club members for you to borrow. We have also created a starter kit via Amazon with some basic and higher end gear that we recommend.

Who plays on this team?

The team is made up of working professionals from the Greater New Orleans area, graduate students and ex-pats from across the globe. While there is no 'typical' player, most members of the club are looking for a challenge, physically outgoing (or are willing to be), and excited about being part of a team both on and off the pitch (rugby terminology for 'field').

What teams do you play?

We are a Division III club that plays in the True South Rugby Union in the Spring. We play against teams throughout the gulf south as part of the regular season and if we qualify for the playoffs, opponents include clubs from across the country.

In the fall we participate in the Robert Markel Cup (RMC) . The RMC is a local competition started by Blues club members with the goal of growing rugby in the region. We play teams in the Greater New Orleans area and Baton Rouge.

What are the rules of rugby?

In rugby we don't have rules, we have laws.  There are too many laws to explain here, but here is a link to a quick tutorial to give you some of the basics.  If you want to better understand the game, come out to a practice or a game!
